Welcome to Ballytruckle Welsh Cobs

At Ballytruckle Welsh Cob Stud we breed two types of horse, the purebred Welsh cob and the large Welsh partbred. Specifically we breed the 50% Welsh cob X tb - crossing our Welsh cob stallion over the tb mare.

The Welsh Cob is the result of generations of careful breeding to produce a horse that all the family can enjoy from children to adults. Welsh Cobs will carry all in safety and with flair. They are extremely versatile and will hunt calmly all day, showjump to grand prix level, excel at dressage and carefully take learners through the grades at Pony Club.

In Wales the farmer didn't have room for a horse for each job -he needed a horse that could do all the jobs around the farm - so the Welsh Cob evolved as a steady trainable horse that could be used by all members of the family. Used for taking produce or the family to the market, the school run, ploughing the field, hunting, mustering and any other job that the farmer had in mind.

Ballytruckle started in 2000 with one elderly cob mare, in 2007 we have six welsh cob mares and fillies, a mature welsh cob stallion and an imported welsh cob colt yearling.

The Large Welsh Partbred- 50% welsh cob X tb

Ballytruckle Stud breed and produce the large welsh partbred by breeding the welsh cob stallion over quality NZ thoroughbred mares selected for their race record, pedigree and conformation.

At Ballytruckle our horses are raised on quality clover and ryegrass pasture 24/7. They thrive on the clean New Zealand air and temperate climate that prevails in South Auckland. The large and spacious paddocks have plenty of shade and shelter from trees and hedges. Most fences are post and rail with numerous natural water features, so youngstock learn to be sensible around and through water when being handled and started under saddle.

At Ballytruckle we raise them in social groups with a head mare as matriach so most lessons in a pecking order are being reconfirmed during their formative years making them easy to handle when backing. With their natural outdoor living and herd structure the horses develop strength, soundness and competitiveness.
